The history of inflatable rubber boats – From high performance inflated skins

The first use of modern inflatable boats began in mid-1800, but the history of inflatable boats goes back much further. In fact, indigenous tribes around the world have, in past centuries, sought to use animal skins and inflated bladders to keep them afloat in the water. These were more like the real boats rafts, but showing the rapid realization that you can fill a water resistant material with air and float to the surface of the water.

The first use of inflatable boats was in 880 BC, when the king of Assyria using greased animal skins inflated with air to move his troops across a river. Other records of history show that during the Ming Dynasty in China, inflated skins were used for river crossings.

The modern era of history inflatable boat

The Duke of Wellington presented the first real modern use of what is now known as an inflatable boat. Others soon followed, but these primitive boats were prone to leakage and easily bored.

In the 1840s, the army and several naval officers, including the British Lieutenant Peter Hackett, developed inflatable boats specially designed for use in Arctic exploration. In 1848, U.S. General George Cullum introduced an inflatable rubberized fabric that is used to some extent in the civil war. In 1866, three men crossed the Atlantic on a raft of three tube, the first transoceanic voyage in the history of the inflatable boat. It was shown that many of these inflatable boats were sturdy, reliable and worthy of further development.

Vulcanized rubber changed the history of rubber boats

In 1900, the manufacture of vulcanized rubber inflatable boat took to the next level. Several events occurred in countries around the world. Two important inventions were developed by Germany inflatable boats A. Meyer Bau Boote tire. England and France, two different companies (Zodiac and RFD) developed modern versions of inflatable rubber boat at the same time.

One of the most famous shipwrecks in history – the demolition of the RMS Titanic – has also demonstrated the viability of rubber lifeboats. The high rate of loss of life on the Titanic was partly due to an insufficient number of lifeboats wood then in use. If the Titanic was equipped with inflatable rubber boats, many more lives were saved. It was not until World War II, however, that the ships at sea began regular use of inflatable boats and liferafts.

World War II and the History of Inflatable Boats

Two events led to increased use of inflatable boats for the army and navy. First, the process of vulcanizing rubber have greatly improved, and the second war, the sea takes a heavy toll. Warships and submarines have even started carrying inflatable rubber boats to drain quickly and without taking up much space on a ship or when not in use. At that time, most inflatable boats were actually shaped boat, with a forehead or the tip of the keel.

Inflatable boats were also used by the military for amphibious landings in shallow water and cargo, equipment and even torpedo the ships at sea from the coast. Inflatable boats could be corrected, the troops were able to bring with them to be used again to exit a beachhead if necessary.

Inflatable boats from 1950 to present

After the war, inflatable boats continued to be used by consumers, but they were basically rafts that could be paddled or rowed. It was not until the 1950s, when the French Alain Bombard attached an outboard motor of an inflatable boat, these versatile boats actually moves into the mainstream. One of the earliest proponents of motorized inflatable boats was Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the famous marine biologist and diver.

In the 1960s, the story became inflatable boat with the tide. Now, they were incredibly popular with all recreational fishermen to accelerate. A variety of new and improved styles, including RIB V-rigid shell and several high performance has hit the market in recent years, demonstrating that these light boats can be used for almost any type of water movement. There is no doubt that the history of inflatable boats will continue to include improved manufacturing and new styles, the most effective.
